The Arbella Insurance Foundation Worked Collaboratively to Support Nonprofit Organizations in 2020

The Arbella Insurance Foundation sought to address new challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic while continuing to support longstanding charitable partners


QUINCY, Mass., February 9, 2021 
In 2020, the Arbella Insurance Foundation donated $2.6 million to support 625 different charitable organizations throughout New England, with donations totaling more than $33 million since its inception in 2005. The Foundation responded early to the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic by donating more than $125,000 to local food pantries, homeless shelters, human service organizations, community health centers working to provide relief efforts to people in need throughout New England as well as education and cultural institutions. As part of that donation, the Foundation joined a statewide effort by giving financial support to the Covid-19 Response Fund that provided one-time operating grants to nonprofits whose operations support seniors, communities of color, immigrants and other vulnerable populations impacted by the pandemic. As the pandemic continued, the Foundation created new initiatives and encouraged Arbella Insurance Group (“Arbella”) employees and independent agents to support local organizations.

“Clearly the impact of the pandemic had an immense impact on public support of for nonprofit organizations.” said John Donohue, chairman, president and CEO of the Arbella Insurance Group and chairman and president of the Arbella Insurance Foundation. “At the outset of the crisis, we began discussing what we could do to help and called upon our Arbella Insurance Group employees and independent agents to step up in a time of need. And they did. This past year we have realized how resilient we all are. I am grateful to the generosity of our Foundation, employees and our partner agents for their continued efforts and support."

It is because of their generosity, that the Foundation finds great value in working with and supporting Arbella employees and independent agents who volunteer their time and provide in-depth insight into the needs of the local community and the funds from the Foundation have a direct impact on those in need. Throughout 2020, the Foundation, Arbella employees and independent agents came together to make donations, attend virtual galas and lace up their sneakers for 5Ks representing Team Arbella.

Highlights among the Foundation’s 2020 charitable giving initiatives include:

Hunger Relief

The Foundation’s Let’s Drive Out Hunger program has continued to address the growing problem of food insecurity that affects thousands of people throughout New England. Together, the Foundation and the Arbella partner agents have been able to contribute more than $1.3 million to food pantries in our local communities over 12 years. The Foundation and Arbella agents have helped many of the 400 emergency food programs, soup kitchens, food pantries, and food banks across New England communities that desperately need our support.

Early in the Covid-19 crisis, the Foundation was made aware of the dramatic increase in local hunger and homelessness. Many local organizations faced dramatic increases in new households registering for help to feed their families. Although many programs struggled to meet the needs of families, they persevered and some even started delivery of food to high-risk individuals. Throughout the spring and summer, the demand for food and donations persisted as many nonprofits struggled to respond to their communities’ most pressing needs. In response, the Foundation launched a new program called Give Food x3, which tripled donations from Arbella employees and independent insurance agents made to local food programs impacted by the virus. Collectively, Arbella employees and independent agents, along with the Foundation match, made a meaningful impact by distributing more than $75,500 to many local food pantries across New England.

Supporting Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice

The Foundation furthered its relationship with the Museum of Fine Arts by providing a grant of $100,000 as the Expanded Teacher and Student Resources sponsor that is part of the MFA’s diversity and inclusion outreach and educational efforts.

The Foundation increased its support of YW Boston through its sponsorship of the Academy of Women Achievers Luncheon and Elevating Lives Series that focuses on the YW mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.

Recognizing the unique needs of immigrants amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the Foundation strengthened its partnership with the City of Boston Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Advancement (MOIA). As the top Champion Sponsor of the “We Are Boston 2020: From Resilience to Equity” virtual event, the Foundation’s donation supported 20 diverse nonprofits that received mini-grants from MOIA for services including Covid-19 relief, mental health support, legal services, youth development and career services. The sponsorship also supported the event’s workshop that explored the roots of systemic racism in our society.

In addition to its support of the YMCA of Greater Boston’s summer camp program, the Foundation was a main sponsor of the Y’s Training, Inc. fundraising event. Training Inc. provides work force and language skills to adults.

Support of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Although Covid-19 has been an unprecedented health concern, the Foundation’s support of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to screen for cancer remained a top priority. October 22, 2020 marked the 12th annual Pink Day in which Arbella Insurance Group employees joined forces with the Foundation to raise funds for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Community Benefits Program. Employees raised $20,792 in support of cancer screenings and education for medically underserved populations. Although the event was different due to Covid-19, Arbella’s employees’ generosity remained the same. The Foundation matched this contribution for a total donation of $41,584. To date, Arbella’s Pink Day has raised more than $403,000 for cancer awareness and screening.

Retiring Distractology

The Foundation announced the retirement of its Distractology program the end of 2020. The program, in its 11 years, trained more than 20,000 young, inexperienced drivers in MA, CT and RI on the dangers of distracted driving. The program technology was based on research by the College of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and was intentional in curbing unsafe driving behaviors before they became habits. 148 independent insurance agents hosted the program in their city or town as it visited 165 different high schools. The Foundation provided the Distractology trailer and program to the College of Engineering at UMass Amherst, along with funding needed to support the program for three years. At UMass, Distractology will be used to further the important research, education and outreach on distracted driving behaviors.

Beyond Financial Support

Arbella used its robust social channels to spread awareness of the challenges that the nonprofit organizations were facing and ways in which people could lend support. In total, Arbella published more than 50 posts in support of 26 charities, garnering tens of thousands of impressions. One organization received a sizable donation from a new donor based on one of the posts.
