Arbella Raises $28,000 for Dana-Farber’s Mobile Mammography Program
Funds raised by Arbella employees and matched by Arbella Insurance Foundation at annual “Pink Day” event will help fund Dana-Farber’s Mammography Van
QUINCY, Mass., Nov. 1, 2012 — The Arbella Insurance Foundation today announced it has raised $28,000 for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Mammography Van, the only mobile mammography program in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Arbella employees raised nearly $14,000 in support of breast cancer screening mammograms and breast health education to eligible women in Massachusetts. prevention at the company’s annual Pink Day event, held on October 16. This money was matched by the Arbella Insurance Foundation for a total of $28,000. The funds will support Dana-Farber’s Mammography Van screenings in the community in 2013.
Pink Day was started in 2009 by employee Dot Olson after she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent treatment at Dana-Farber. Dot created “Pink Day” with the goal of driving support for breast cancer awareness and research. The event is now coordinated by the Arbella Activities Committee (AAC); a group of employees from across the company who are committed to promoting a culture of teamwork and camaraderie, corporate citizenship and fun. The group strives to make a difference by making it easy for all employees to be involved in the communities Arbella serves.
During Pink Day, many employees show their support by wearing pink to work, donating money to dress casual, contributing to departmental gift baskets and participating in the donated basket raffle. All of the money raised goes directly to Dana-Farber.
“Pink Day gets more impressive every year,” said Chris Carter, human resources manager and AAC chairperson. “Our employees go above and beyond in showing their support, from donating funds to purchase the items for the gift baskets to buying Pink Day t-shirts and hundreds of raffle tickets. It’s proof that at Arbella, we really care about giving back, and everyone does their part to make a difference.”
“We’re proud to be supporting Dana-Farber in its mission of driving awareness and prevention of breast cancer,” said John Donohue, chairman, president and CEO of the Arbella Insurance Group and chairman and president of Arbella’s Foundation. “This is a cause that’s personal to so many of us at Arbella, since breast cancer touches so many people. I’m so impressed by the generosity and dedication of our employees in doing their part to support the important work being done at Dana-Farber.”
Dana-Farber's Mammography Van provides mammograms and breast health education to medically-eligible women, aged 40 years and older, regardless of their ability to pay for such services. The Mammography Van, the only mobile mammography program in Massachusetts, partners with community-based organizations and neighborhood health centers in its mission to decrease breast cancer morbidity and mortality among medically-underserved women and increase survival rates for those diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Dana-Farber is enormously grateful to Arbella and its employees,” said Janna Schultz, director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at Dana-Farber. “With Arbella’s support we are able to spread awareness and provide life-saving breast screening directly to the growing number of women throughout Greater Boston in need of these vital services.”
