Arbella Insurance Group Named One of Boston Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work” for Fifth Consecutive Year

Recognized for employee satisfaction and positive workplace culture

QUINCY, Mass., June 4, 2013 — The Arbella Insurance Group(“Arbella”) today announced that it has been recognized as one of the Boston Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work” for 2013, marking the fifth consecutive year in a row the company has been honored in the large business category. The award program recognizes small, medium and large-sized companies with high levels of employee satisfaction and positive workplace cultures.

The Arbella Insurance Group, a mutual insurance company based in Quincy, Mass., employs over 800 workers in Massachusetts and 80 employees in Connecticut, and is affiliated with a network of approximately 500 independent insurance agents. Arbella prides itself on attracting the best employees in the area and experienced a 5% growth in employee headcount in 2013, in spite of the struggling economy. This is a sure sign of the company’s financial success. Employee retention is impressive – 70 percent of Arbella employees have been with the company for five or more years, and more than 34 percent for at least 15 years. The company is also known for its exceptional customer service and its commitment to giving back to the communities through its Charitable Foundation.

“To be recognized as a Best Place to Work for five years in a row is truly an honor for all of us at Arbella, especially as we prepare to celebrate our 25th anniversary as a company,” said Gayle O’Connell, senior vice president of human resources and marketing communications at the Arbella Insurance Group. “Arbella is more than a place of business – it’s a community. We’re dedicated to creating a positive culture where our employees feel valued and inspired to do great work. That translates to a phenomenal customer experience and a strong commitment to charitable giving. Our employees are very generous of their time and money and take pride in getting involved, and we are very proud of our team.”

Arbella is committed to fostering a caring and collaborative culture that extends beyond compensation and benefits. In addition to offering work-life balance options, learning and development opportunities and a variety of health and fitness-related benefits, Arbella fosters an environment of team work and giving back to the community.

Employees at Arbella take the company’s mission of corporate citizenship to heart by volunteering, organizing and contributing to a variety of different causes. Whether they are organizing donation drives for victims of natural disasters, participating in fundraising events such as the Walk for Hunger or donating their time at local organizations serving families and children, Arbella employees are dedicated to supporting organizations that work hard on the behalf of others.

Just this month, for example, several Arbella Operations team managers spent the day volunteering at Quincy’s Interfaith Social Services, a nonreligious multiservice center and food pantry for families and individuals. Additionally, a group of organized and highly enthusiastic employees comprise the Arbella Activities Committee. This group of twelve balances having fun in the workplace with giving back to those in need. They organize company-wide food drives, coordinate care packages for vets and hold raffles for the annual Jimmy Fund rally and Pink Day fundraisers. They are cultural champions who embrace Arbella’s core values and drum up plenty of support for the many programs and charitable organizations that need help.

“I can honestly say I feel fortunate to work here,” said Kristen Scholl, IT senior business analyst at Arbella. “During my 15 years here, Arbella has provided me many opportunities to advance my career, whether through Arbella University or the tuition reimbursement program. Our workplace culture makes me feel like I’m part of a family where everyone really cares. Arbella supports and encourages volunteering with a variety of local charitable organizations that are important to us as employees. Being able to give back is important to me and Arbella consistently gives me that opportunity.”

Each year, the Boston Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work” program recognizes 75 small, medium and large-size businesses whose benefits and unique initiatives put them ahead on the employee satisfaction curve. To select the winners, employees from more than 400 Massachusetts-based companies participate in an anonymous survey that asks about company benefits, atmosphere, values and loyalty. The results are analyzed by a third-party research firm, and the winners are broken down into three categories based on size.

The “Best Places to Work” rankings will be released at a June 13th awards celebration at the Citi Wang Theatre.
