Arbella Insurance Foundation Honors U.S. Veterans with Military History Harbor Cruise

BOSTON, Mass., November 6, 2014 –

The Boston Harbor Island Alliance, nonprofit partner of the Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area, announced today that the Arbella Insurance Foundation has provided generous support for the annual Boston Harbor Islands cruise for U.S. military veterans. Thanks to the Foundation’s support, the cruise is free to veterans from any branch of the U.S. military, and only $5.00 for friends and family.

Departing from Boston’s Long Wharf and the Hingham Shipyard on November 15, at 11:00am, the cruises will take passengers through a guided military history tour of the harbor, including a stop at Georges Island for a visit to historic Fort Warren. While on the island attendees can participate in a variety of family friendly activities, including fort tours, a civil war presentation with period costumes and the new Junior Ranger program.

“Arbella’s Foundation has been a generous supporter of the Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area,” stated Phil Griffiths, president of the Boston Harbor Island Alliance. “Their support of this year’s veterans’ cruise further reinforces Arbella’s commitment to the community and the men and women of our armed services. We’re honored to have them as partners in saying ‘thanks’ to those that have given so much to our country.”

“We are proud to support this special event for our local military heroes,” said John Donohue, chairman, president and CEO of the Arbella Insurance Group and chairman and president of the Arbella Insurance Foundation. “Veterans services have been a major focus area for our Foundation since the beginning. We’re committed to making sure the service men and women of our communities are taken care of.”

Typically closed for the season, Georges Island and Fort Warren are being reopened specifically for this special event under the management of Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). Throughout the day rangers from both DCR and the National Park Service will lead the educational sessions and be available to attendees looking to learn more about the military history of the Boston Harbor Islands.

The cruise welcomes more than 400 veterans from Boston and the surrounding communities. Advance tickets are strongly recommended and can be reserved by visiting bostonharborislands.org.

About the Boston Harbor Island Alliance

In 1996 Congress designated the Boston Harbor Islands a national park area and created a new public/private model for park development and funding. This legislation specifically named the Boston Harbor Island Alliance (BHIA) the park’s business agent, and established a unique role for the organization as the 501(c)(3) non-profit designated by Congress to partner in the development, operations and management of the national park. BHIA works in collaboration with key partners like the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), City of Boston, and National Park Service among others to promote the park, produce fun and educational public events, and fundraise to create new park facilities for recreation and enjoyment.
